In this body of work I reinterpreted ancestral amulets.
Ornaments or jewellery thought to protect against evil, danger and heal disease. These are objects imbued with symbolism and meaning. The description of three decorative combs was the starting point. Prominent Yaka citizens wear these combs as a talisman in their hair. The wearer hopes to be given the qualities of the depicted animals. Inspired by Greek amulets: periapra/phylachta (περίαπτα/φυλαχτά) I created small pouches using animal skin. These packets however are empty as a reminder that the quality one seeks whether courage, wisdom or strength lies already within us. Placed close to the body these tiny sacks become a reminder that what you think you become.
