Fragments

Inspired by the urban environment and the decomposing remains of abandoned buildings I explored the properties of wood through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction.

Using a hammer and chisel I tore apart the veneer. The thin layers of wood glued together detached in parts creating different levels and leaving ‘hairs’ of wooden fibres similar to the layering of exposed materials. Fragments of a whole. Each fragment a unique brooch which, although made as a one off, can be viewed as part of a larger composition, one complementing the other. The coloured wood references the stains imprinted on walls as marks of time passed and corrosion of materials. Metal frames support the wooden fragments reminiscent of the naked structures of buildings left uncovered and unprotected.
